The Lead R&D Application Development Engineer/Scientist is a technical expert in the Engineering Plastics space. They are charged with development, implementation, and qualification of new products and product line extensions in customer’s applications. They must understand customer’s formulations and processes to help achieve customer’s critical requirements. Additional responsibilities include providing technical support and troubleshooting all customer quality and product performance issues.
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Owns in-lab formulation, processing, testing, and support to the customer for new product launches, new applications of existing products, and product modifications/extensions
  • Identifies, creates, and defines the application requirements for new products
  • Defines application solutions appropriate to customer requirements and critical to quality measures, CTQ’s
  • Works collaboratively with Technical Marketing Lead to get product qualified in customer trials
  • Supports customer quality and product performance issues via in-house testing
  • Keeps abreast of latest technical developments for the product and applications
  • Maintains a database to benchmark competitive offerings for each application
  • Designs and builds prototypes for customer evaluation
  • Defines in-house capability needs; and identifies and utilizes 3rd party application labs to supplement in-house capabilities as needed
  • Coordinates activities with the project team and the customers
  • Conduct literature and patent reviews defining freedom to practice
  • Provides strategic guidance to the business and resin development R&D group to drive new product development
  • Develops functional solutions to complex processes
  • Serves as a source of expertise in Nylon 6 Engineering Plastics formulation and processing technology areas
  • Participates in Industry Standards committees
Basic Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in polymer science, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, or material science; Ph.D. preferred
  • 7+ years’ industrial experience in engineering plastics application development of polymers (e.g. extrusion and molding)
  • Hands-on experience with Nylon 6 and/or polymer processing methods (twin screw compounding, extrusion, injection molding, and others)
  • Experience in customer-facing roles
Additional Qualifications:
  • Track record of developing and commercializing new polymer materials
  • Deep understanding of polymer structure/property relationship and practical experience in the modification of polymer properties
  • Broad experience in polymer analytical techniques (Rheology, DSC, GPC, HPLC, IR, and NMR Spectroscopy), ability to interpret analytical data for problem solving
  • Experience in conducting customer-focused projects and collaborating with cross-functional team (business and marketing) to drive innovation
  • Excellent problem solving skills
  • Must be familiar with innovation processes like Stage Gate and able to use Six Sigma/statistic tools
  • Knowledge of IP processes and patent filing
  • Execution focused to manage project milestones, timelines, and resources
  • Strong statistical and computer skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and presentation skills
  • Must be action and results oriented
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment
  • Ability to generate new technology and ideas
  • Demonstrated leadership of smaller projects or components of larger projects
  • Greenbelt certification
