TOOL ENGINEER - Metal Stamping


Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Provide engineering support for die builds and equipment. Will also assist in specifying and identifying perishable tooling, print information, tooling design and quotes.


  • Communicates and is involved in the initial development and review of new programs with program management and Tooling Managers.
  • Acts as a liaison with the engineers and Maintenance Managers to review and provide technical input on new tooling programs.
  • Assists in evaluation of tooling orders received from program engineering to determine whether tooling is to be manufactured in-house or procured from an outside vendor. Calculates and records tool requirement data on tooling order and routes order to tool design or purchasing department.
  • Reviews blueprints, sketches, gages, sample parts and prototype parts, and visualizes shape, mechanical structure of tool.
  • Contacts area supervisors, purchasing, receiving, or other personnel to follow up on procurement or production activities and to expedite movement of tools between departments or vendors.
  • Provides reactive technical support to the production area to ensure timely repair of all equipment.
  • Supports the Six Sigma and Continuous Improvement Projects that are relevant to the tooling areas.
  • Specifies material to be used for tools to be built along with direction on processes in building the tooling.
  • Oversees tooling being built by outside vendors for tooling that will be running production.
  • Must have the ability to design tooling to customer requirements and pass the information to the designer to put it into full CAD generated drawing.
  • Must have the ability to determine tonnage requirements, proper shear clearances, and tolerances for die punching and trimming, along with proper forming clearances, etc.
  • Knowledge in proper tool steel recommendations in which steels should be used in certain applications, as well as recommending coatings or other process improvements to the tooling.
  • Advises in set up and operation of machine tools such as lathes, milling machine, drill presses, saws, and grinders and other hand tools to ensure proper machining of tooling.

Other Skills and Abilities:

Ability to read and interpret GD & T dimensional blueprints. Familiarity with gages and measurement equipment. Ability to use and understand both English and metric dimensions and be able to translate one to the other. Knowledge to troubleshoot and repair mechanical production failures and initiate improvements. Must possess overall knowledge of stamping tool design and build with an automotive background preferred.


BS a plus, Associate’s degree (A. A.) or equivalent certification from a two-year college or technical school and five to ten years experience; or five or more years of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience, journeyman card in tool and die a plus
