Design Engineer
JOB DESCRIPTION
Position Description:
The Design Engineer reaches across departments working with the engineering team, the sales team, the customer service team, and the manufacturing team. Responsibility for leading the design process of product components and units from concept to production to achieve the product objectives within a specified time. Design new products and improve existing products accurately and cost effectively. Resolve any problems and/or questions incurred during production due to design error or misinterpretation. Continually develop new processes to improve safety, quality, cost, and time to delivery.
Job Responsibilities:
Lead the design, development and release of all components and assemblies for product lines based on bid requirements, specifications, and other pertinent data.
Develop shop drawings for the fabrication and assembly of designed products including sheet metal, structural steel, plumbing, hydraulic, and drivetrain components/schematics while considering electrical requirements
Develop initial bill of material (BOM) for new designs including fabricated and purchased components
Work with internal team and suppliers to manage requirements, specifications, timing, and costs to ensure that customer and product objectives are met
Ensure that product meets all necessary safety compliance requirements
Analyze existing and new designs to identify and implement cost reduction opportunities, reduce design complexity, and improve quality and labor efficiency
Maintain organization of customer project files and assist sales, fabrication, and team members with build specific- and product-related questions
Provide technical support to internal and external customers
Support test and field incident resolution of technical problems, complaints and failures and drive quick resolution
Create and release ECO’s as necessary based on internal and external feedback
Skills:
Experience in the following categories: mechanical design, sheet metal, welded structures, bolted joints and fasteners, hydraulics, fluid and air flow, structures/structural analysis, electrical and wiring systems, weight distribution and axle weight calculations, engines/installation, chassis, suspensions, braking, and drive trains
Experience in product weight reduction.
Experience in cost reduction.
Knowledgeable in metals/materials, their application, manufacturing methods, procedures, and quality
FEA and DFMA experience required with DFMEA experience a plus
Ability to multi-task and adjust priorities as shop and customer needs change.
Strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with team members and internal and external customers
Enjoys complex problem-solving and collaboration.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Thrives in a fast-paced work environment.
Demonstrated ability to simultaneously manage a large and diverse number of projects with professionalism, cooperation, and persistence.
Must have customer service-oriented mentality with the ability to handle customer issues tactfully and professionally.
Requirements:
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related degree
Minimum 5 years’ experience as a design engineer in a manufacturing environment
Proficient in machine/mechanical design in SOLIDWORKS
Working knowledge of using PDM systems
AutoCAD experience is a plus
